With November passing and December quickly flying by, it's bowl season and once again the SEC has nine teams playing in games. Alabama has the first Heisman trophy winner in school history and will be playing for the BCS National Championship in January. The South has transitioned back to the days of old, with the exception of Bama's first Heisman, and Tide fans can feel the "Bear" smiling down with pleasure. The Gator faithful are in a state of depression after bombing out in the SEC Championship game. The Florida defense can rest easier knowing the guy that burned them for over 180 total yards just won the Heisman trophy though. The only thing that could have made this football season more memorable for Tide fans would have been watching Gene Chizik crash and burn in his first season at Auburn. That, however, did not happen as the Tigers finished a modest 7-5 along with a host of other SEC teams.
The 2009 season went just as most sports writers had planned and hoped for as Florida and Alabama were on a collision course from day one of the season. The title game was all set for the biggest game in the history of the SEC with the Gators ranked first and the Tide second in most major polls. Both teams were 12-0 and well ahead of everyone else in the conference. The outcome was not as expected as Alabama steamrolled a weaker and slower Florida team. Not only did the Tide outplay the Gators, they outcoached them too. Urban Meyer was seen on the sidelines pacing back and forth seeming to be praying for divine intervention (or for Tebow to come through like he has so many times before). The Gators should make quick work of the Cincinnati Bearcats though.
So it all comes down to the Tide versus the Texas Longhorns in a match up of historic powerhouse programs. Two very proven coaches, two Heisman candidates, and two of the best defenses in the country. I may be crazy for thinking this, but I think Alabama will whip the Longhorns fairly easily. Alabama will certainly be a favorite in this game, but since they now have the Heisman trophy winner that may be considered a curse. The team with the Heisman winner does not seem to fair well in National Championship games. Here's to hoping that changes. I will be in Dallas the evening of the game so if Texas pulls the upset I'm sure I will be escorted out of the state.
